In the Church of Norway, it’s most common to be baptized as an infant – but you can be baptized at any age. Many choose to be baptized during a Sunday service, but you can also choose one of our drop-in-days or contact our office to book a time for a private ceremony on a weekday. You can also contact us if you have questions or want to talk about your options.
If you are an adult, or youth over the age of 15, all you need to get baptized is a valid ID. If you want to bring witnesses, you can, but the church can also help you by providing two witnesses that are necessary for the ceremony.
If the person being baptized is a small child, you will need to provide the name declaration issued by the government. When a child is being baptized, (at least) two godparents promises to partake in the child’s Christian upbringing, alongside the parents and the church. The godparents must be church members, and over the age of 15. Godparents do not need to be present for the baptism ceremony itself, but is recorded in the church registry. If the godparents are present, they double as the witnesses for the ceremony. If not, you can bring (at least) two other witnesses, or the church can provide witnesses.
