New Bishop of Borg Diocese

Rev. Helga Haugland Byfuglien was appointed new Bishop of Borg Diocese 23rd September 2005. She is the third woman bishop among the 11 bishops in the Church of Norway.

Helga Haugland Byfuglien succeeds Bishop Ole Christian M. Kvarme, who earlier this autumn was appointed new Bishop of Oslo. She received a solid mandate through the voting from church bodies and employees prior to the appointment. Among the six canditates nominated by the Diocesan Council in May this year, the support for Haugland Byfuglien was overwhelming. She will be consecrated in a service in the Cathedral of Fredrikstad 11th December 2005.

The main challenge
- The main challenge for the church is to pass on the message of love, forgiveness and hope in such a way that people find our words and deeds relevant. When we communicate Gods unconditional love through Jesus, we are challenged to live as close to people as Jesus did, Haugland Byfuglien says.

Haugland Byfuglien was born in 1950. As a pastor in the Church of  Norway she has held positions in both Nidaros and Borg dioceses. Since 2001 she has been Secretary General for the Norwegian YMCA / YWCA.

Helga Haugland Byfuglien chairs a national project to reform cathecumenical training in the Church of Norway. This project - initiated in 2003 - is organised under the Church of Norway`s National Council and funded by the Norwegian Parliament.
