The diocese now covers the western counties of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane, and Norwegian seamens' chaplaincies abroad. The see, together with Nidaros one of Norway's two first, was established on the island of Selja in the 11th century, after St. Sunniva, the regional patron saint, had been enshrined there in 996. When Sunniva's shrine was moved to Bergen in 1170, the bishop settled there.
